    COMMITMENT TO YOUTH EDUCATION

The Indiana Council on World Affairs continues its commitment to youth education by its 21st year participating in Academic WorldQuest, a nationwide program of the World Affairs Councils of America.

This global studies competition is open to all Indiana high schools.

Any Indiana teacher in any Indiana high school* (public, charter, private, home school) can participate by registering their school for the competition. Schools may register as many teams as there are students who are interested. (*All schools' registrations are subject to confirmation per ICWA & WACA.)

    PREPARATION

Preparation begins as soon as a teacher and their students anticipate participating on the AWQ 2025 competition. Being aware of world events, reading newspaper and journal articles, and watching on-line news and videos of current world affairs, all contribute to preparation.

To prepare for the quiz-style competition, teachers provide guidance and access to the FREE on-line Study Guide for independent, self-guided study by students.

Some teachers facilitate on-going in-person workshops to engage the students in face-to-face dialogue about these significant world conditions.  Also, teachers use the study materials for their international relations classes.

Students organize into teams of four to test knowledge of global politics, geography, international economics, history, and world cultures.

When a teacher registers for the 2025 competition, the Indiana Council on World Affairs will send you on-going, up-dated information.

    THE COMPETITION

This quick-paced event consists of questions on 10 categories for a total score of 100%. To manage the duration of the competition event, there may be seven (7) to ten (10) Q&A per category.

    1. Academic WorldQuest 2025 Study Guide by the World Affairs Councils of America: The questions for the 2025 competition will be derived from the "Academic WorldQuest 2025 Study Guide."

For AWQ 2025, students will be learning about ten (10) categories of topics with global significance. These topics will be announced during September, 2025.

The Study Guide for the 2025 Academci WorldQuest will be published during October 2025.

    2. Great Decisions 2025 by the Foreign Policy Association: As AWQ 2025 Category 10, the specific Great Decisions study topics for the local and national competitions may include selected chapters from the Great Decisions 2025 Briefing Book.

The Great Decisions 2025 Briefing Book is suggested reading but is not required reading for the Indiana or National competition.

(Re: Great Decisions: For teachers and community leaders who include the Great Decisions 2025 and/or 2024 Briefing Book, DVD, and Teacher's Guide PDF in their study curriculum, the books, DVDs and PDFs are available, at educational discount, from the Indiana Council on World Affairs: Books | ICWA (indianaworld.org)

    PARTICIPATION IN-PERSON OR VIRTUAL

Academic WorldQuest is a Hybrid Event: The 2025 competition offers each school the option of participating in-person or virtually. It is implemented via Zoom using the Quizziz gaming software that is optimally accessible through PC or tablet. The questions are displayed and answered, and the scoring is implemented via Quizziz.

For in-person participation, students, teachers, and others will gather at the University of Indianapolis, Schwitzer Center' Each team must be equipped with a laptop PC or tablet for viewing the questions, and the Q&A will be projected onto multiple, larger screens. A complimentary lunch is offered for the participating students and teachers.

For virtual participation, teams will be able to participate by meeting at a local high school or community center, so there is no need to travel. Each team must be equipped with a PC or tablet. The capability to project the quiz questions onto a larger screen is recommended. The schools usually provide lunch for participating students and teachers.

TEAM CODE: Before the competition, each registered teacher will be sent a link to access the event via Zoom. In turn, the teacher must forward this link to each team captain.  Each team will be assigned a team code which must be entered into Quizziz exactly the same way before each of the 10 rounds. Failure to do so results in interruption of the game play and delays the competition.
