ABOUT OUR TOPIC:

Our conversation will cover U.S.-Cuba relations, Cuba’s deepening economic and humanitarian crisis, its internal challenges of governance and repression, as well as the prospects for a more peaceful, prosperous and secure future for the Cuban people.

Humanitarian conditions in Cuba are taking the country to increasingly perilous daily realities, such as food shortages, energy blackouts, limited pharmaceuticals, and economic constraints. Plus, many people are emigrating out of Cuba.

Cuba’s long-term alliance with authoritarian regimes including Venezuela, Russia, China, and Iran as well as its own one-state, one party principle of the Communist Party of Cuba, has not equipped it to respond to citizenry request for more freedom. Democratic opposition movements have been met with the Cuban regime’s use of repression and surveillance to maintain power. Young Cubans are playing an increasingly active role in demanding political change.

Carrie Filipetti's expert commentary will address U.S. policy towards Cuba, and the effects of sanctions and international pressure. If there were a will for a freer society, how would Cuba cobble together the national institutional leadership that is essential for economic reform and a democratic transition?

For a review of current conditions in Cuba within an historical, and current, context of U.S.-Cuba relations, we'll be discussing all this, and, more. Sign up today - click here: https://indianacouncilonworldaffairs.wildapricot.org/event-6780723
