The Indiana Council on World Affairs advances its 20th year participating in Academic WorldQuest, a nationwide program of the World Affairs Councils of America. This global studies competition is open to all Indiana high schools.

An array of co-sponsors, including the Indiana Council for the Social Studies and the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association enrich the event.

With long-term sponsor University of Indianapolis, History and Political Science Department, Professors Doug Woodwell, International Relations, and Brian Platt, Geography - History, will serve as Quizmasters for the competition.

Support from Indiana University Global, International Business, and Area Studies Centers makes possible the winning team's teacher's travel to Washington, DC for the national competition, certain event expenses, and cash awards to the winning schools in the amounts of $1,000, $500, and $250. (The Area Study Centers, formerly known as the National Resource Centers, are within the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies,)

Any Indiana teacher in any Indiana high school (public, charter, private, home school* can participate by registering their school for the competition. Schools may register as many teams as there are students who are interested. (*All schools' registrations are subject to confirmation per ICWA & WACA.)

To prepare for the quiz-style competition, teachers provide guidance and access to the FREE on-line study guide for independent, self-guided study by students.

Some teachers facilitate on-going in-person workshops to engage the students in face-to-face dialogue about these significant world conditions.  Also, teachers use the study materials for their international relations classes.

Students organize into teams of four to test knowledge of global politics, geography, international economics, history, and world cultures.  There is no need to register students at this time.

When you let us know that you are interested in the 2024 study program and competition, we'll send you on-going, up-dated information.

This quick-paced event consists of questions on 10 categories for a total score of 100%. To manage the duration of the competition event, there may be seven (7) to ten (10) Q&A per category.

Academic WorldQuest is a Hybrid Event: The 2024 competition offers each school the option of participating in-person or virtually. It is implemented via Zoom using the Quizziz gaming software that is optimally accessible through PC or tablet. The questions are displayed and answered, and the scoring is implemented via Quizziz.

For in-person participation, students, teachers, and others will gather at the University of Indianapolis, Schwitzer Center, UIndy Hall. Each team must be equipped with a laptop PC or tablet for viewing the questions, and the Q&A will be projected onto multiple, larger screens. A complimentary lunch is offered for the participating students and teachers.

For virtual participation, teams will be able to participate by meeting at a local high school or community center, so there is no need to travel. Each team must be equipped with a PC or tablet. The capability to project the quiz questions onto a larger screen is recommended. The schools usually provide lunch for participating students and teachers.

Before the competition, each registered teacher will be sent a link to access the event via Zoom. In turn, the teacher must forward this link to each team captain.  Each team will be assigned a team code which must be entered exactly the same way before each of the 10 rounds. Failure to do so results in interruption of the game play and delays the competition.
