The Indiana Council on World Affairs advances its 20th year participating in Academic WorldQuest, a nationwide program of the World Affairs Councils of America. This global studies competition is open to all Indiana high schools.

An array of co-sponsors, including the Indiana Council for the Social Studies and the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association enrich the event.

With long-term sponsor University of Indianapolis, History and Political Science Department, Professors Doug Woodwell, International Relations, and Brian Platt, Geography - History, will serve as Quizmasters for the competition.

Support from Indiana University Hamilton Lugar School’s National Resource Centers, including the Center for the Study of Global Change, is very much appreciated.  New for the 2023 competition is corporate sponsor CenterPoint Energy.

Any Indiana teacher in any Indiana high school (public, charter, private, home school* can participate by registering their school for the competition. Schools may register as many teams as there are students who are interested. Students organize into teams of four to test knowledge of global politics, geography, international economics, history, and world cultures.  There is no need to register students at this time. When you let us know that you are interested in the 2024 study program and competition, we'll send you on-going, up-dated information.  *Upon confirmation per ICWA & WACA.

This quick-paced event consists of questions on 10 categories for a total score of 100%. To manage the duration of the competition event, there may be seven (7) to ten (10) Q&A per category.

To prepare for the quiz-style competition, a teacher recruits as many students as are interested and provides guidance and direct on-line access to the FREE study materials for independent, self-guided study by teachers and students.

Some teachers facilitate on-going in-person workshops to engage the students in face-to-face dialogue about these significant world conditions.  Also, teachers use the study materials for their international relations classes.

1. Academic WorldQuest 2024 Study Guide by the World Affairs Councils of America, available by October 1, 2023. Questions for the 2024 competition will be derived from the "Academic WorldQuest 2024 Study Guide." The Study Guide for 2024 will be posted on the Indiana Council on World Affairs AWQ web page by October 1, 2023.

When published and posted, the Study Guide will provide instant access to timely articles, lectures, and videos on the AWQ 2024 ten (10) categories.

EXAMPLE: For an example of a past Study Guide, SEE: "AWQ 2023 Study Guide 2-1-23" on Academic WorldQuest | ICWA (indianaworld.org)

2. Great Decisions 2023 by the Foreign Policy Association: The specific Great Decisions 2023 documents for competition study are to be specified, and may include the Great Decisions 2023 Briefing Book, the Great Decisions 2023 Glossary, and selected Great Decisions High School magazines.

For the national competition, the specific required reading selections will be detailed in the World Affairs Councils of America's Study Guide. The Great Decisions Briefing Book is likely to be required reading.

For the Indiana AWQ, the competition may be limited to testing on the Great Decisions Glossary - all eight topics; and selected Great Decisions magazines as specified in the Study Guide. The Glossary is now posted on the Indiana Council on World Affairs web site.

Upon registration, each school is provided one Great Decisions 2023 Briefing Book. Additional books may be ordered at educational discount for classroom use or independent AWQ study: Books | ICWA (indianaworld.org)                  For Book Orders: Academic WorldQuest | ICWA (indianaworld.org)

Academic WorldQuest is implemented via Zoom using the Quizziz gaming software that is optimally accessible through PC or tablet.

The 2024 competition will be offered in a hybrid format with each school having the option to participate in-person or virtually.

For in-person participation, students, teachers, and others will gather at the University of Indianapolis, Schwitzer Center, UIndy Hall. Each team must be equipped with a laptop PC or tablet for viewing the questions; and the quiz questions will be projected onto multiple, larger screen. Lunch is included for participating students and teachers.

For virtual participation, teams will be able to participate by meeting at a local high school or community center, so there is no need to travel. Each team must be equipped with a PC or tablet. The capability to project the quiz questions onto a larger screen is recommended. The schools usually provide lunch for participating students and teachers.

Before the competition, each registered teacher will be sent a link to access the event via Zoom. In turn, the teacher must forward this link to each team captain.  Each team will be assigned a team code which must be entered exactly the same way before each of the 10 rounds. Failure to do so results in interruption of the scoring and delay in the competition.

For teachers who register a team, the Indiana Council on World Affairs (ICWA) provides:
